Call for Applications: TRAJECTS PhD Fellowship 2026

Research for a Just Transition: Connecting Africa, Europe, and Latin America

Are you ready to lead research that doesn’t just observe the energy transition but actively shapes it to be fair and inclusive? TRAJECTS is seeking visionary doctoral candidates to join a global network dedicated to climate mitigation and socio-ecological justice.

The Core Mission

This fellowship is built on the principle that the “Just Transition” cannot be solved in isolation. You will work within a transnational framework that prioritizes dialogue between the Global South and the Global North, ensuring that energy solutions are locally relevant yet globally connected.

Key Thematic Areas

Your research proposal should align with one of these critical pillars:

  1. Fossil Fuel Phase-Out: Strategies for decarbonization and climate mitigation.
  2. Renewable Integration: Sustainable implementation of clean energy systems.
  3. Socio-Ecological Transitions: Supporting regions currently dependent on extractive activities (e.g., coal mining) as they transition to new economic models.

Fellowship Benefits

  • Duration: 4 years of full funding for your PhD.
  • Network Access: Direct collaboration with partner hubs, including the University of Cape Town (South Africa), Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and Technische Universität Berlin (Germany).
  • Transdisciplinary Environment: Access to the TRAJECTS virtual lab, joint study modules, and global policy forums.

Candidate Profile

  • Must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field (Energy Tech, Economics, Policy, Sustainability, etc.).
  • A strong research proposal that demonstrates both technical feasibility and a focus on “Justice” (social, economic, or environmental).
  • Fluency in English (as the primary network language).

Timeline

  • Application Deadline: April 10, 2026
  • Review & Interviews: Mid-2026
  • Program Start: Late 2026 (aligned with host university calendars)

Applications are typically submitted through the TRAJECTS online portal or via the specific host university’s application system (UCT, UNAL, or TU Berlin).

  1. A detailed Research Proposal (linking your work to Just Transition).
  2. Your Curriculum Vitae and Academic Transcripts.
